Filing order (sort order)

The order in which classes in a classification system is filed in the printed system, in which the documents are filed on shelves or document records are filed in bibliographies.

In the Bliss classification system the filing order consistently maintains general-before-special.

Filing order may be understood as rules used for ordering index entries. When a computer performs the sequencing it is mostly termed "sort order".
