Workshop I

Assignment:

  • Form a study group (3-4 students).
  • Select one of the metatheories listed in Marcia Bates’ chapter or in Core Concepts in LIS. [See: Approaches to Library and Information Science]
  • Read (some of) the literature explicitly discussing this metatheory. When reading: Try to identify 1) how is this metatheory different from other metatheories? 2) What appears to be the strength about this metatheory? 3) What appears to be the weak sides of this metatheory?
  • Also: Evaluate the papers you read: Do they provide clear answers to the questions above? Are they scholarly or more like advertising a particular point of view?
  • If possible, find an example of a knowledge organizing system constructed on the basis of this metatheory. (The connection between the theoretical basis and a given system may be something claimed, something that you examine, whether you agree or not).
  • Present your findings for the class.
  • You may use PowerPoint’s, the blackboard, whatever you like.

The presentation of each study group should take approximately 15 minutes.
