Assignment:  (preliminary ideas - to be revised)

1. Form a study group (3-4 students).
2. Choose a problem related to what has been taught since first workshop. You may, for example choose one of the ideas mentioned below. You may also chose other ideas related to the contents of the course. (It would be a good idea to chose the same topic as you will letter use for the term paper).
3. Present your findings for the class.

You may use PowerPoint’s, the blackboard, whatever you like.

The presentation of each study group should take approximately 15 minutes.

 

Possible ideas

A) Knowledge organization within a given domain (any domain - e.g. arts, music, chemistry . . . ). You may, for example, examine how this domain is reflected in a KOS of your own choice. 

• A simple task would be to check it in relation to a recent textbook or list of journal titles.
• A more demanding task would be to find a systematic bias, for example a religious bias, an American bias, an ideological bias.

B) Knowledge Organization in relation to a given genre of your own choice. (Examples of former choices are: Rock music, Russian political posters, . . .    ).

• What kind of knowledge does this chosen genre organize, how does it do it - and for whom?"

C) Discuss: The needs for human interpretation and judgments in knowledge organization in the digital environment. 

D) Examination of a particular approach or technology for Knowledge organization, e.g. an examination of the use of facet-analytic techniques on the Internet, the use of ontologies and Topic Maps, folksonomies. . . .
