Hermitage Museum, Digital collection
In The State Hermitage art museum in Sct. Petersburg has IBM developed a digital collection organized by artist, title, subject, and by certain attributes such as style, genre, theme, and date. IBM has also developed search engines that can retrieve pictures in the collection by searching color or form.
"IBM's Query By Image Content (QBIC) search technology helps you locate artwork using visual tools. Find artwork by selecting colors from a palette or by sketching shapes on a canvas. Or, refine existing search results by requesting all artwork with comparable visual attributes.
Use the Advanced Search to find artwork by artist, title, or subject, or by certain attributes such as style, genre, theme, or date.

The QBIC Colour Search locates two-dimensional artwork in the Digital Collection that match the colours you specify. You select colours from a spectrum, define proportions, then execute the search. It really is that simple.

With the QBIC Layout Search, you become the artist. Using geometric shapes, you can arrange areas of colour on a virtual canvas to approximate the visual organisation of the work of art for which you are searching.
